A Method to Obtain Pregnancies in Mares Using Minimal Sperm Numbers

چکیده

Insemination at the uterotubal junction is a practical technique that can be used to decrease the number of spermatozoa used per insemination. Video endoscopic insemination allows one to visualize the uterotubal papilla during the insemination and provide higher pregnancy rates than a flexible AI catheter. Further studies are needed to determine if a consistent technique can be developed for deposition of sperm on the uterotubal papilla using a flexible catheter. The use of low-dose insemination is important for situations where sperm numbers are lacking, such as subfertile stallions, heavily booked stallions, cryopreserved sperm, and sexed semen. Using video endoscopic insemination, we were able to obtain approximately a 40% pregnancy rate with one-time insemination of 5 million fresh sperm, 5 million frozen/thawed spermatozoa, and 5 million fresh, sexed sperm. Further studies are needed to improve pregnancy rates with sexed, frozen equine sperm. New Assisted Reproductive Techniques for Horses

Introduction Although embryo transfer provides a means of obtaining pregnancies from some mares that might not otherwise be capable of producing offspring, some mares cannot provide embryos for transfer. Mares in which embryo transfer may not be successful include those with: 1) failure of ovulation, 2) chronic endometritis (uterine inflammation), or 3) anatomical problems (e.g., cervical adhes...

Sperm Transport in the Mare Reproductive Tract: A Review

The objective of this study was to review the literature on sperm transport in the mare. During this process the sperm cells must reach the oviducts in order to fertilize the oocyte, but before reaching this site it must go through the uterus that is a hostile environment at this moment since there is an inflammatory reaction in this location that aims to eliminate excess spermatozoa and bacter...

Use of Oocyte Transfer in a Commercial Breeding Program to Obtain Pregnancies from Mares with Reproductive Pathologies

Oocyte transfer can be used to obtain pregnancies from mares in which embryo transfer is unsuccessful. Transfer of oocytes in a group of older mares with long histories of infertility resulted in pregnancies from 13% (6/46) of cycles, 23% (6/26) of oocyte transfers, and 38% (6/16) of cycling donors. Noncycling, hormone-treated mares were suitable oocyte recipients. With continued modifications,...

Ejaculate Characteristics Depend on Social Environment in the Horse (Equus caballus).

Sperm competition theory predicts semen characteristics to be affected by the social environment. We used the polygamous horse (Equus caballus) to experimentally study within-subject plasticity in response to different social environments. Stallions were sequentially exposed, over a period of 8 weeks each, to other stallions and then singly to mares, or vice versa (in adjacent boxes separated b...

Equine reproduction: advances in artificial insemination techniques

This article covers recent developments in the field of equine artificial insemination. Use of both chilled and frozen semen is discussed. For chilled semen, there is new information about what to do if the semen shipment is delayed and on maximising pregnancy rates in older mares by careful evaluation of the cervix. The number of motile sperm needed for insemination is reviewed in light of the...
